Gangster games kind of blur together to me. Escape prison/have dreams of money, then a guy says “do an illegal thing” and you shrug and do that illegal thing. Plus more illegal things because mreeehhhh. They’re always open world, feature someone who will betray you because the plot says they have to, there are drugs, mafiosos and everything just goes through the motions.
Yakuza though stands out for me though. Why? Because every fight ends with people spitting their broken teeth fragments out while sobbing for forgiveness into your leather shoes. Each piece lovingly given by those who were personally touched the greatness of the recipient? Something so wonderful that it enriches the lives of everyone who comes into contact with it?
Or are you like me, and see something that people praise because…people praise it?
When you think of mighty superheroes, what do you think of? Rippling muscles, spandex and a booming voice bellowing a catchphrase? Yeah, that’s about what I think of too. Except my superhero isn’t shouting “up, up and away” or “it’s clobbering time” or even “here I come to say the day.”
